Background: Alistair is both an academic and an intensive care clinician, trained in Ireland and Australia. He is a Chair of Critical Care Medicine in the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences of University College Dublin and an Associate Professor Monash University- School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. He is also an Honorary Intensivist in the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne and an intensivist in St Vincent’s university Hospital in Dublin. Alistair has direct clinical and research experience of conducting clinical trials in the critically ill patient cohort. In addition, Alistair is the WP leader for the PREPARE EARL package (along with Chris Butler and Steve Webb) many emerging and tropical infectious diseases in many countries of Southeast Asia.

Background: Chris Butler is Professor of Primary Care in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford, Professorial Fellow at Trinity College, and is the Clinical Director of the University of Oxford Primary Care Clinical Trials Unit. He is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator, and practices as a salaried GP in Mountain Ash in South Wales for the Cwm Taf University Health Board. Professor Chris Butler has been a work package leader on three European commissioned studies including GRACE and has been part of the leadership team of twelve clinical trials in primary care. He is expert in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and provides governmental advice. He has authored over 140 peer reviewed papers.

Background: Nick Francis is a general practitioner (GP) and Clinical Reader in Primary Care at Cardiff University. He graduated as MD in 1992 and PhD in 2010. He leads the Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance workpackage in the Wales Centre for Primary and Emergency Care Research (PRIME Centre Wales). He has been involved in a number of European projects, including GRACE, R-GNOSIS and RAPP-ID, and leads or co-leads a number of studies including three large RCTs.

Background: Micaela graduated in Microbiology from Cardiff University in 1995 and completed a doctorate at the University of Oxford. Micaela later moved to the National Health Service as a clinical scientist where she led a laboratory for the development and evaluation of new molecular diagnosis. In 2009, Micaela joined the Wales School for Primary Care Research as a Research Fellow, and now Wales Centre for Primary and Emergency Care Research (PRIME Centre Wales), and has worked on other EU funded studies including R-GNOSIS (EU 7th framework programme) and RAPP-ID (EU IMI).

Background: Dr Nina Gobat is a post-doctoral research fellow at Cardiff University with an interest in the behaviour and motivation of people, as individuals and collectively, and in the development and evaluation of complex interventions. Nina’s research focuses on both public health and healthcare initiatives and covers a range of areas including pandemic preparedness, enhancing health and wellbeing among school children, and improving maternal and child health. Human beings behave in complex ways. Objectively their behaviours may appear irrational, but there is often internal coherence to their choices and actions. Much of Nina’s work aims to better understand these choices and to develop ways of influencing change.

Background: Kerry Hood is a Professor of Trials and the Director of the Centre for Trials Research at Cardiff University. She is also the Director of the Research Design and Conduct Service for South East Wales which is working with the NHS and social care to develop high quality, innovative, service driven research. Professor Hood is a Senior Research Leader for Health & Care Research Wales. Professor Hood has a degree and PhD in Statistics and has worked in medical statistics since 1996. Professor Hood spent the first part of her career focussed on research in primary care and then in 2006 established the South East Wales Trials Unit and started to develop a broader research portfolio. Professor Hood’s specific methodological research interests are in trial design, outcome measurement and research inclusion with a particular focus on complex trials, whilst the topic areas she mainly focus on are primary care, infections and learning disabilities. Professor Hood is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Society for Academic Primary Care and the Society for Clinical Trials.

Background: Dr Ronnie Moore is the Co-PI of the EARL work package. Ronnie is a lecturer at the University College Dublin (UCD), teaching medical and social anthropology/ sociology in the Schools of Public Health Medicine and Population Science and Sociology. His research interests are in health, illness and society, and in conflict theory, culture and ethnic identity. He has successfully gained major research grants and has led on various research projects. This included major ethnographic investigations of health and related need in two border villages in Northern Ireland, (commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Services, UK), and an international study of Irish Travellers Health.

Background: Prasanth Sukumar is a graduate research assistant in the EARL Work Package. Prasanth is a PhD candidate in the School of Medicine, University College Dublin. He holds a BSc degree (Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics), M.A (Rural Management), MSocSc (Health and Illness) and MPhil (Population Science). Prasanth has many years of professional research experience with prestigious research organisations in India and Ireland. Most recently he worked as a research assistant in the International Social Survey Program (ISSP 2013) in the School of Sociology, UCD.

Angela has expertise in health communications and leads the Operations and Communications Management at Wales Centre for Primary and Emergency Care Research (PRIME Centre Wales). Angela has first class degree in Journalism from Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, and over 8 years professional experience in health research communications and project management.

Background: Dr Steve Webb is a Senior Staff Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine at Royal Perth Hospital and a Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine and Pharmacology and the School of Population Health at the University of Western Australia and a Clinical Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. He is the Vice-Chair of the International Forum of Acute Care Trialists, which is a network of the world’s ICU-based investigator-led clinical trials networks. He is a member of the Executive and Chair of one of four Working Groups of the International Severe Acute Respiratory Illness Consortium. This Consortium aims to provide a coordinated global clinical research response to emerging infectious disease including potential future pandemics. Dr Webb is a founding member of the executive of the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance which is a representative organisation of the investigator-led clinical trials networks in Australia. He has chaired the Human Research Ethics Committee at the University of Western Australia since 2006. He is a Director of Aalix Health Services Consulting.
