9. CREATE: Clinical Research Education And Training in Europe –workpackage 9

A unique on-line open access and face-to-face education and training curriculum that comprehensively addresses the issues relevant to empower or ensure the incorporation of laboratory and clinical research and the results thereof, in the response to emerging epidemics.

Key Objectives

This platform aims to:

  1. support the research agenda within the Consortium by linking with a repository of relevant literature and to create links to external national electronic resources and relevant colleges;
  2. promote evidence-based recommendations for the optimal management of new epidemic or pandemic infectious disease threats, considering both the patient and society, with the aim of reducing the burden of disease for the EU and improving the quality of care, through cost-effective strategies;
  3. support educators and healthcare managers by providing online access to the relevant literature and documents as well as a platform enabling the rapid sharing of information and experience during an outbreak;
  4. foster communication between clinical practitioners and researchers through workshops. Speakers will be drawn from the Consortium’s clinicians and scientists. Delegates will be made aware of the developments and outputs of the programme and encouraged to continue and develop their research skills and activities in order to ensure sustainability of the programme beyond the conclusion of European funding;
  5. encourage links between the Consortium and other relevant research and educational programmes in Europe;
  6. ensure that web-based resource and educational packages that inform and support the life-long learning needs of prescribing professionals targeted are widely available and sustainable beyond European funding.

Key tasks

  • First we will carry out an Education and training needs assessment to identify educational and training requirements of members and stakeholders across the work packages (WPs) and networks, and establish an outline curriculum.
  • The educational content will be delivered locally, nationally and internationally but a key resource will be the PREPARE Virtual Learning Platform (VLP) which will be established by the end of year 1. CREATE will also work with the partner societies – European Respiratory Society (ERS), European Society of Intensive Care, European Scientific Working group on Influenza (ESWI), European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and The World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians (WONCA) to deliver educational symposia, postgraduate courses, videos and other resources which will develop curriculum topics, and provide up–to-date information to cascade out through society members, congress attendees and external stakeholders.
  • The VLP will be available for rapid sharing of information, research results and clinical protocols during an outbreak
  • CREATE will work with WP 3,4 and/or 5 to ensure standard operating procedures and protocols for sample collection, handling and shipment are available and disseminated to all relevant networks and WPS, and deliver face-to-face training as required for research team members in conjunction with network leads and other work packages.
  • CREATE will provide face-to-face meetings and/or deliver educational materials virtually to external stakeholders including public health teams, veterinarians, clinical pharmacologists, politicians and policy makers.
  • CREATE will assimilate the findings from the PREPARE research trials and surveys to enable widespread dissemination, and translation into clinical practice.
